Books Read - January 2020

Blackwell, Juliet
  • The Vineyards of Champagne *****
Fiction.  A two-part tale of a recent American widow who travels to the Champagne region of France on business and unravels the story of young love during the Great War and how the people of Reims fled to the underground caverns below the vineyards to escape the German bombs.

  • Tiny Treasures ****
Fiction.  Very short stories involving the Baba Yagas and the Riders.

Charles, Ann
  • A Long Way from Ordinary *****
Fiction.  Second in the Undertaker paranormal cozy mystery series set in Deadwood.  Clementine is finding more and more bodies marked with certain symbol coming across her table, and a mysterious man dressed all in black takes on the Santa Fe Sidewinders but manages to get away.  The hunt leads to Galena, where it seems most men of the town are sporting the same symbol.  Hank and Jack come across a mine while out hunting, but the bars across the front aren’t to keep trespassers out, it’s to keep something indescribable in.

Christie, Agatha
  • The Body in the Library *****
Fiction.  Third in the Miss Marple mystery series.  A woman’s body is found in the Bantry’s library, but the Bantry’s have never seen her before. In a convoluted story, Miss Marple’s unique perspective is needed to help solve the case.

  • The Moving Finger *****
Fiction.  Fourth in the Miss Marple mystery series.  Poison Pen letters are flying around town, and when an injured pilot moves to town to recover with his sister, receives one, he begins investigating.  When one of the recipients kills herself, Scotland Yard gets involved. When the case still isn’t being solved, Miss Marple comes to town.

  • Murder at the Vicarage *****
Fiction.  First in the Miss Marple cozy mystery series.  The vicar tells the store of an unlikable man who is shot in the vicarage.  Although two people have confessed, neither of their confessions are believed.  Miss Marple solves the murder.

  • A Murder is Announced *****
Fiction.  Fifth in the Miss Marple mystery series.  An announcement in the local paper intimates that a murder will occur at a certain time.  As people gather to play the “game”, a murder does take place, but unraveling it is up to the police and Miss Marple.

  • They Do It With Mirrors *****
Fiction, Sixth in the Miss Marple mystery series.  Miss Marple visits an old school friend.  She has been warned that her old friend is in danger, but she has no idea where that trouble is coming from. Carrie Louis and her husband run a foundation to help juvenile delinquent boys, but when her stepson is murdered she can’t believe that any of the boys would be guilty.

  • The Thirteen Problems *****
Fiction.  Thirteen little tales as told by the Tuesday Night Club members.

Evanovich, Janet
  • Twisted Twenty-six *****
Fiction.  Twenty-sixth in the Stephanie Plum cozy mystery series.  Grandma Mazur’s new husband has died, and the mob is looking for keys he was in charge of. They believe Grandma has them but won’t give them up, so they set out to kidnap her and make her talk.

French, Dawn
  • Dear Fatty ****
Non-fiction.  Memoirs told in the fashion of letters to family, friends, celebrities, and strangers.

French, Tana
  • Broken Harbor *****
Fiction.  Fourth in the Dublin Murder Squad mysteries.  Mike draws a case that leads him back to Broken Harbor, a place that holds horror for him and reminds him of his mother’s suicide. But another woman needs him.  The victim of an attempted murder, she lies in the hospital between life and death while the police begin the investigation into a triple homicide in which her entire family has been killed. Mike and his rookie partner, Richie, are led on a convoluted chase toward the man they think is guilty, only to find that madness is involved and tells a different story.

  • The Secret Place *****
Fiction.  Fifth in the Dublin Murder Squad mysteries.  When a young girl approaches Detective Stephen Moran with a photo with a dead boy’s picture on it, it draws him out of Cold Case to work with a Murder detective at a girl’s school.  A boy has been found dead on the grounds, and the police believe one of eight girls is guilty of the murder, only they don’t yet know which of the eight it is.

  • The Trespasser *****
Fiction.  Sixth in the Dublin Murder Squad mysteries.  Detectives Conway and Moran are working the night shift and pull what looks like a domestic quarrel that turned into murder.  What they have no idea of, however, is how close it will hit to home.

  • The Witch Elm *****
Fiction.  Toby leads a normal life with a loving girlfriend and a good job, when his life is turned upside down during a burglary in which he suffers a brain injury.  While in recovery, he learns that his uncle is dying of a brain tumor, and Toby moves into the Ivy House to help out, but it is all but restful.

Gabaldon, Diana
  • Outlander *****
Fiction.  First in the Outlander time-travel series.  Claire travels back in time through some ancient stones and finds herself running for her life as she is chased by both the English and the Scots.  When she is captured and taken to Castle Leoch, her only thought is to get back to the henge so she can return to her own time and to her husband, Frank.  But circumstances intervene, and she finds herself drawn to the young Scot who has taken her under his wing.

Garrett, Danielle
  • Diamonds are a Ghost’s Best Friend ****
Fiction.  Seventh in the Beechwood Harbor Ghost cozy mystery series.  Star and Lucas check out an ideal wedding venue, but when a ghost appears and tries to drive them off, Star can’t help but volunteer to aid the ghost.

  • Ghosts Just Wanna Have Fun ****
Fiction.  Sixth in the Beechwood Harbor Ghost cozy mysteries.  Scarlett and Lucas are on their honeymoon in Hawai’i while a film crew is shooting an episode of a dating reality show next door.  When one of the women is found dead in a pool, Scarlett is forced into solving the case when the ghost contacts her.

Hamilton, M.L.
  • Jaguar *****
Fiction.  Jaguar is home in Sequoia caring for his mom who suffers from Alzheimer’s. When he receives notice from a DNA testing company that Nancy’s daughter is also his daughter, he doesn’t know what to think.  He’s not father material.  But when Nancy dies of cancer, he has to step up to the plate and decide whether his music career is more important than Sophia.

  • The Moon Thief ****
Fiction.  Fist in the Moonlight Trilogy.  A San Franciscan psychiatrist almost dies in a car accident, but when a mysterious man in a black suit asks her if she wants to live, she says, “Yes.” and her life is changed forever. 

Hannah, Kristin
= Firefly Lane *****
Fiction.  Tully and Kate have been best friends for years, but their paths separate after college, Tully heading for the bright lights in broadcast journalism, and Kate heading into marriage and motherhood.  They fight and reunite several times over the years, but when the chips are down, they’re reunited again for one last time.

  • Fly Away *****
Fiction.  Second installment of Firefly Lane.  Kate is gone, but Tully and Marah are lost and desperately trying to find their way back to life.  Dorothy has finally found herself and hopes that Tully will allow her back into her life.  When Tully suffers a car accident, it draws all of them closer together.

Hoffman, Alice
  • Everything My Mother Taught Me *****
Fiction.  Short story about a young girl who loved her father, and whose mother didn’t love her.

O’Neill, Bill
  • The Great Book of Hawaii ***
Non-fiction.  Random trivia of the Hawaiian Islands.

Wang, Wendy
  • Haunting Charlie ****

Fiction.  First in the Palmetto Witch cozy mystery series.  Girls have gone missing, and when Charlie realizes an evil ghost is to blame, she sets out to defeat him.

Beaton, M.C.
  • Beating About the Bush ****
Fiction.  Thirty-third in the Agatha Raisin cozy mystery series.  Agatha is hired to investigate a case of industrial espionage, but she finds out quickly that is only a ruse to hide a much more serious crime.

Boutwell, Clay
  • The Agora Letters Volume 1 
Fiction.  First in the Agora Letters mystery series.  Five short stories set in the Boston area in the mid-to-late 1800’s. The narrator tells tales based on his experiences with the Agora Society 20 years earlier.

Brackston, Paula
  • Secrets of the Chocolate House *****
Fiction.  Second in the Found Things time-travel series.  Xanthe is drawn to an old chocolate pot during an estate sale and ends up traveling back to see Samuel in the 1600’s, where she meets a mysterious woman who runs a chocolate shop.  Xanthe fears the Samuel has been jailed for being Catholic, but instead he’s been employed by the wealthy owner of an Abbey under reconstruction.  That man becomes a danger to Xanthe, and she must find a way to save Samuel and return to her own time.

French, Tana
= Faithful Place *****
Fiction.  Third in the Dublin Murder Squad mysteries.  Frank Mackey works in Undercover and leads a life built around his work and his daughter.  But when his younger sisters begs him to come home for a visit, he dreads returning to the place and the family he left 22 years ago.  A suitcase has been found in an abandoned house that should have never been there, and it leads to the discovery of a skeleton, one that takes him back in time and tears apart his life.

  • The Likeness *****
Fiction.  Second in the Dublin Murder Squad mysteries.  Cassie goes undercover again posing as a postgraduate student living with four other students in an old house.  Unlike other assignments, due to her uncanny resemblance to one of the students who lived in the house who has been found dead, Cassie is replacing her in order to find out who the killer is.

  • I Give You My Body ****
Non-fiction.  How Diana Gabaldon writes sex scenes.

Galenorn, Yasmine
  • The Eternal Return *****
Fiction.  Tenth in the Wild Hunt urban fantasy series.  Talia lost her powers centuries ago to Lazarous, a liche who has come to the PNW, and she asks the Wild Hunt to help her destroy him. With a powerful sorceress at their side, the team goes searching through mine tunnels to find him.

  • A Sacred Magic *****
Fiction.  Ninth in the Wild Hunt urban fantasy series.  Ember is scheduled to fight Nuanda, but the only way to defeat him is for her to retrieve Brighid’s Flame, a magical sword kept in a well in Annuwn.  She travels there with Victor and Yutani as they make their way through a wild forest even the gods dare not enter.

Garrett, Danielle
  • First Place Witch ****
Fiction.  Ninth in the Beechwood Harbor Magic cozy mystery series.  Holly wins a spot in a potion contest, but when one of the other competitors dies of a hex, she is the prime suspect and must prove her innocence.

  • A Very Beechwood Christmas ****
Fiction.  Christmas isn’t Christmas without Santa, and when he goes missing, Holly and her friends go looking for him.  Though they find him in time, the reindeer are in no condition to fly the sleigh, so they rely on a quartet of winged horses to do the job.

Hamilton, M.L.
  • Brief as Lightning *****
Fiction.  Third in the Avery Nolan fantasy adventure series.  Avery just wants to live her life, but when her partner and his son are kidnapped, she must return to the Greensward to find and bring them back.

  • Momentary as a Sound *****
Fiction.  Fourth in the Avery Nolan fantasy adventure series.  Agent Braddock comes to Avery and Duncan in need of help. Scientists have found a portal and have been bringing back waters from the Greensward, and they need to be stopped.  Avery’s father gets involved, and she must wrestle with trying to create some sort of relationship with him but doesn’t know if she can overcome the hurt she suffered all her life.

  • Short As Any Dream *****
Fiction.  Second in the Avery Nolan adventure series.  Avery is still trying to figure out how to reach the Greensward and rescue Duncan, but she has more worries landing on her doorstep when an ICE agent arrives to inquire about Duncan’s whereabouts.  Afraid he will put Bay into foster care, she hides the aunts and Bay at Duncan’s treehouse.  When Bay’s grandfather, the evil Taeseus arrives to claim Bay, Avery has to work with the ICE agent to try to rescue him.

Hannah, Kristin
  • Magic Hour *****
Fiction.  Julia is trying to rebuild her life after one of her young patients went on a killing spree then killed herself.  The bad publicity continues to dog her, and her self-confidence is shot.  When her sister Ellie, the police chief of a small town in the Olympic National Forest calls her to take on a new patient, a young girl who wandered out of the forest and can’t communicate, Julia feels that this could be her second chance.  She has no idea she will fall in love with the little girl and the heartbreak that will bring to both of them.

Lourey, Jess
  • Unspeakable Things *****
Fiction.  Cassie and her sister live in fear of their father, a sexual deviant who throws swinging parties several times a year.  Boys in the town are being abducted and molested then returned to their homes.  Cassie is determined to find out who the molester is, though she fears she knows him already.

Fiction.  Fourth in the Hunted Witch Agency urban fantasy series.  The team is searching for the witch who has been killing witches and humans with poisoned drugs.  Devon and Gerard head to Scotland to find him.

  • Magically Betrayed ****
Fiction.  Third in the Hunted Witch Agency urban fantasy series.  Devon goes head to head with her grandmother in order to stop her preying on witches.

  • Magically Blended *****
Fiction.  Fifth in the Hunted Witch Agency urban fantasy series.  The team has caught up with Cameron, leading to a final showdown while Devon prepares to sever the link she has with warlock magic.
  • Magically Bonded ****
Fiction.  Second in the Hunted Witch Agency urban fantasy series.  The agency is still on the search for the super witch who is preying on witches and finally track her down to a castle, which they storm. Devon has received two letters purported to be from her parents who left her when she was a child, and she thought them dead.

  • Magically Bound  ***
Fiction.  First in the Hunted Witch Agency urban fantasy series. Devon is half-witch, half-warlock, but she has a decision to make.  She needs to choose one set of skills and let the other go. She takes on a new job with the Hunted Agency, and her first case involves the kidnapping and slave trade of witches.

Neal, Toby
  • Clipped Wings *****
Fiction.  Novella in the Paradise Crime Mysteries series.  Lei’s Aunty helps some immigrant children, and Lei helps Constance find a new placement in California in order to save her from criminals.  

Robinson, Steve
  • The Penmaker’s Wife *****
Fiction.  Historical fiction. Angelica came from humble circumstances determined to raise her son to be a proper gentleman, but lets nothing, and no one, stand in her way.

White, Loreth Anne
  • In the Dark *****

Fiction.  Eight travelers are flown to a remote lodge in the mountains of B.C., only it isn’t the posh new lodge they’re expecting.  Instead it’s an old rundown building where they find themselves alone and in danger.  One by one, someone is hunting them.

Fiction.  Sixth in the Cat Clan novella series.  A dragon shifter princess falls in love with a bear shifter, but when he disappears, her mother arranges for her to marry a wealthy French dragon shifter.  When her love returns, he must fight to stop the wedding.

Brackston, Paula
  • The Little Shop of Found Things ****
Fiction. First in the Found Things time travel series.  Xanthe and her mother have bought an antique shop in Marlborough.  Xanthe is skilled in psychometry, and when an old chatelaine she bought at auction sings to her, she’s swept back in time to solve a mystery.

Dacus, Rachael
  • The Invisibles ****
Fiction.  Tale of two estranged half-sisters who reunite in Italy upon their father’s death.  They’ve inherited his home and a mystery to solve, but they each are searching for a way to bring a closeness back into their relationship.

French, Tana
  • In the Woods *****
Fiction.  First in the Dublin Murder Squad mystery series.  Detective Rob Ryan gets handed a case of a dead girl who is found on the estate he grew up on.  It brings back memories of his time spent there with his two best friends, both of whom disappeared one day never to return.  Wanting to stay on the case, he fails to tell his boss that he was that little boy, the only survivor, from back then.  But his partner Cassie knows.

  • Silent Crimes ***
Fiction.  Police mystery of two murders surrounding an old commune.

Hamilton, M.L.
  • Americano ****
Fiction.  Fifth in the Zion Sawyer cozy mystery series.  A man is found dead in the freezer at the Indian casino, and Tate is chosen to lead the investigation to find the killer.  Logan is nervous about his 18th birthday, not knowing what will happen to him once he’s out of the foster care program.  Zion and Tate are ready to move on to the next step in their relationship.

  • Caffe Macchiato ****
Fiction.  Fourth in the Zion Sawyer cozy mystery series.  Logan’s long lost father comes back into his life claiming to wants to get to know his son, but when he is found dead, Logan becomes the prime suspect in his murder.

  • Espresso ****
Fiction.  Third in the Zion Sawyer cozy mystery series.  A fellow LAPD cop arrives in Sequoia to visit Tate, but trouble follows him in the form of several gangbangers, and Tate has to face the darkness surrounding his partner’s death all over again.  Rebekah moves in with Zion bemoaning her most recent breakup but decides to stay in town and open her own business.

Fiction.  Second in the A Year of Discovery series.  Destiny is raising her child alone after her husband was killed, and she’s afraid to trust in her dream to become a singer.  It takes another soldier who lost his legs to convince her to try.

  • Swift as a Shadow ****
Fiction.  First in the Avery Nolan adventure series set in Tahoe.  Avery, a newly-divorced school teacher moves into a cabin in the woods left to her by her grandmother and begins a job teaching first graders at the small local school. One of her students is unusual, and at first she believes him to be challenged.  His handsome father, however, intrigues her.  He too is very different from anyone she’s met before.  When she discovers a set of standing stones in a clearing in the woods, her adventure is just beginning.

  • Curses and Candy Canes ****
Fiction.  Anthology of paranormal cozy mysteries.

May, W.J.
  • Christmas Before the Magic ****
Fiction.  First in the prequels to the Chronicles of Kerrigan series.  Simon Kerrigan arrives at Guilder and receives his tatu, a very rare one depicting a warlock.  On Christmas break, he meets Argyle’s sister, Beth, and promptly falls in love, much to the anger of her father.

  • Into the Darkness ****
Fiction.  Second in the prequels to the Chronicles of Kerrigan series.  Simon is back at school and still trying to decipher his tatu.  He begins training with Jason, and is warring with Tristan, the golden boy of the campus.

  • Question the Darkness ****
Fiction.  Third in the prequels to the Chronicles of Kerrigan series.  Simon is starting to gather other students who feel as he does, even though this might cost him friendships and the trust of his mentor.

McGuire, Shawn
  • Kept Secrets *****
Fiction.  Second in the Whispering Pines mystery series.  A circus performer dies, and Jayne is determined that an investigation is required, but the new sheriff in town is unequipped to do the job, and Jayne decides to do some investigating on her own.

  • Family Secrets *****
Fiction.  First in the Whispering Pines witchy cozy mystery series.  Jayne returns to Whispering Pines to close up her grandmother’s house, but as soon as she arrives, she finds a dead body on the property, followed by the ransacked house.  She hadn’t been a cop for six months, but when the Sheriff proposes she work for him part-time while she works on the house, she takes the job, not knowing that he was trying to keep her from solving the crimes.

Novik, Naomi
  • Spinning Silver ****
Fiction.  Tales of silver turned into gold as a group of intrepid folk work to rid themselves of evil and take back their land.

White, Karen
  • The House on Tradd Street  *****
Fiction. First in the Tradd Street paranormal mystery series.  Melanie suddenly inherits an old house from a man she met just the day earlier, and as she proceeds with the renovation, ghosts of the old families return to bet her to solve the mystery surrounding the house.

Wood, Mae
  • Genealogy ****

Fiction.  Based on a true story.  Elliot meets Alice on a train bound to Seattle.  After five whirlwind days together, he sets off back home to the Philippine Islands where he works with his uncle.  Alice is settled in Seattle with a teaching job.  Elliott plans to return to her within two years so they can be married.  His love letters to her are found a century later by Alice’s great-granddaughter, Ali.  As Ali reads Elliot’s letters, she pieces together a love story long past.
